My mother says there is an upcoming sidewalk sale-type flea market coming up in the Main Street area of Lawrenceville, but she needs more specific info. Has anyone heard info about this or know who I could call, or where to look? TY.

The personal nature of books

I also come from a family (and group of friends) who willingly share their favorite books. Some of my happiest memories of my mother are the books we both loved. I like that with my daughters, too. And sometimes our favorites just don't match. I often tell the story of an author I was reading and my mother said she liked reading it because it told her about "me" though the books didn't speak to her. (Oddly, that author no longer speaks to me.) When our younger daughter was going through a rough patch in her life, I quickly shared a book that was speaking to me FOR her, and she wondered what made me ever think she was going to find THAT book helpful.
And now I'm reading books both daughters love - some I love, and some not so much. I'm thrilled that each daughter is sharing a favorite book with the other one even though I think neither daughter will really like the other's novel. And that's okay. We just have to care that we want to share our favorites with each other. It's part of family and friends.
Both sons-in-laws (sons-in-law? son-in-laws?) have shared books that I love, too.

I'm in the very beginning stages of planning my wedding (more than a year away), which means I'm shopping for vendors and venues. Which brings me to the community to ask:
Can anyone recommend a good bakery for a young couple (ie no extravagant spending) in the Pittsburgh area that does custom fondant wedding cakes? Extra points for unique flavors and cute cakes in their portfolio!
Thanks!

OK, so I scheduled a UHaul without looking up the location at 1052 Washington Blvd. I figured it would be somewhere busable, but from Google maps it looks like it's between some forest and a highway. Does anyone know if there is a way to bus to this location (Washington Blvd between Lincoln Ave and Larimer Ave? If not, any experience with UHaul pick-up spots that are busable and the process of rescheduling them in general? My friends suck and no one will give me a ride. I seriously can't figure this out via the PA website, but maybe one of yinz is more savvy than I. Thanks anyone who can help!!!

Are there curb laws in The City of Pittsburgh? Are they enforced? Has anyone ever received a ticket for parking too close to the curb? Is anyone else annoyed by this?
I just think it poses a real safety hazard when you can't see around the corner when you're trying to drive through an intersection (or pull out of a parking space like I was this morning).

Does anyone know of anywhere that does vehicle storage? A buddy of mine has two semi-classic (older cars, but not registered as classic) cars that he needs to put in storage. I think he is looking for somewhere that does the whole climate controlled interior storage. The only places that I know do vehicle storage do it outside.
Also…
Can anyone recommend someone for central air installation on the North Side? I have dealt with Stahl, but the order fell through. I have currently been dealing with Gillece, but they have been no shows on the last two appointments we have set up for estimates. No explanations. No apologies.
I am tired of giving up entire days waiting for them. I can give my money to someone else.
Any recommendations would be appreciated.

I'm Chuck with ACORN (www.acorn.org), and we're hiring canvassers to help meet a state goal of 300,000 new voters.
Here in Allegheny County, we desire to register 60,000 new voters.
If you know someone who wants a great part-time job giving people a voice in our democratic process, then won't you have them call me at the office, 412.441.6551, today, ok?
Thanks again, and I'm looking forward to Drinking Liberally next Tuesday!

I come to you for help, once again! I'm moving to Pittsburgh in the beginning of June and my fiance and I are struggling with the decision on when to buy furniture. We're both off work, so for logistical purposes it's easier to get it here (rather than coordinate delivery when both of us are starting new jobs), and instead of having them load it in our apartment, have them load it in our moving truck. Also, there's a ton of furniture stores where I'm from (Grand Rapids, MI) and with the housing market struggle (It's especially bad in Michigan, our economy is one of the worst in the country) they are offering really competitive prices to drive business. We've found some nice stuff, like a nice contemporary leather couch and loveseat for 999. What are the prices like in Pittsburgh?
Where are the best places to buy furniture? (classic contemporary... pottery barn, crate and barrel type stuff... minus the exorbitant markup) Is there a lot of selection there? Any websites you can refer me to?
Thanks so much in advance guys, you all have been so helpful already, I really appreciate it!

Volunteers will interview and evaluate (with constructive criticism and encouragement) approximately 8 young teens each. The teens pretend to be interviewing for a job, and you, the volunteer, pretend to be the interviewer.
Volunteers must not have criminal history or other issues that would make you inappropriate to interact with young people.
We need people to volunteer for 10 am in Homewood this Friday, and for 3 pm, Downtown this Saturday. If interested, please phone Rachel at 412-281-6629.
